Subject: National Violent Death Reporting System

I am pleased to inform you that the Washington State Department of Health has been selected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for participation in the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS). NVDRS will provide a clearer understanding of the circumstances surrounding violent deaths in Washington State. This data will help guide local decisions about violence prevention efforts and will help track progress over time. More information about NVDRS can be found on CDC’s website: http://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/nvdrs/index.html.

I’d like to thank those of you who assisted with this application, our success both with the application and the grant work was and will be truly dependent on you as our partners.

The grant funding will begin on September 1st. Our first step will be to acquire staff to assist with this work. In late fall, DOH will begin pulling together a steering committee to assist us with this work. Data collection will begin in 2015 in a sub-set of counties. Over the next few years more and more counties will be included.

Thank you again for your support, and if needed we will be in touch regarding your participation in this project with us over the next couple of months.

Sincerely,
Steven Saxe, FACHE
